Ondo State Commissioner for Youths and Sports Development, Saka Yusuf-Ogunleye, says the recent restructuring of Sunshine Stars Football Club of Akure has been of immense help to the club.
Yusuf-Ogunleye told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Akure that the restructuring helped them to victory at the just-ended Gov. Nyesom Wike Unity Cup Competition in Port Harcourt.
“I will attribute the victory to the restructuring carried out in the club. It has already started yielding results ahead of the new season in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL),” he said.
Sunshine Stars and hosts Rivers United had returned to the pitch for the pre-season football tournament’s final match about six hours after winning in the semi-finals.
Thay had overcome MFM FC of Lagos and Abia Warriors of Umuahia in the semi-final matches respectively.
Yusuf-Ogunleye also explained that the feat was further made possible by the commitment of the players and coaches, coupled with the support of their state governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu.
“I am very happy and proud of the team. This is our second trophy in the pre-season tournaments in readiness for the big kick-off.
“The restructuring we are carrying out is paying off and we want to seek the cooperation of all stakeholders so that we can all celebrate together at the end of the upcoming season.
“As we celebrate Christmas, I want to reassure the people of Ondo State of the resolve of government to take sports development to all the nooks and crannies of the state.
‘’Akeredolu has been our pillar, while the players and coaches have been fantastic, and the state Football Association (ODSFA) leadership has been wonderful.” he said.
NAN reports that the club ended the tournament on a high with a 4-1 penalty kicks shootout win over Rivers United at the Sharks Stadium in Port Harcourt on Saturday.
The new NPFL season, which is 2018/2019, is expected to begin on Jan. 13.
