Carpenter jailed 3 months for hemp possession


A Magistrates’ Court in Minna on Friday sentenced a carpenter, Yusuf Usman, to three months in prison for possessing Indian hemp.

Usman, 28, was however, given an option of N10, 000 as fine and 15 strokes of the cane.

The Police Prosecutor, Cpl. Aliyu Malami, told the court that a police patrol team attached to Kpakungu community in Minna, arrested Usman on July 9, when he was found in possession of the substance.

Malami said the offence was contrary to Section 5 and 407 of the Penal Code.
When the charge was read to Usman, he pleaded guilty and begged the court for leniency.
The prosecutor, thereafter, prayed the court to try Usman summarily in line the Criminal Procedure Code.

In his ruling, Magistrate Murtala Ibrahim, summarily sentenced Usman to three months in prison or to pay a fine of N10, 000 with 15 strokes of the cane.
