The Super Eagles of Nigeria are set for a high-stakes World Cup qualifying match against Rwanda, as they look to revive their campaign after a disappointing start in Group C.
theheraldnews.ng recalls that Nigeria has struggled in their opening four group games, failing to secure a single victory. With three draws and one loss, they currently sit in fifth place and must now win their remaining fixtures to stand a chance of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Their journey begins with a must-win clash against Rwanda on away soil.
Head-to-Head Record
Historically, Nigeria and Rwanda have faced each other seven times, with the Super Eagles winning twice, drawing four, and losing once. Rwanda secured their first-ever victory over Nigeria in their last meeting, a 2-1 win in Uyo during the AFCON qualifiers. Also, that result will add extra motivation for the Nigerian team, who are keen on revenge as they travel to Rwanda.
Meanwhile, Rwanda will be brimming with confidence, hoping to complete a historic double over Nigeria after their recent triumph.
Nigeria’s newly appointed head coach, Eric Chelle, has named a 23-man squad for the upcoming fixtures against Rwanda and Zimbabwe. The squad includes star players such as Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, and Ola Aina.
There were concerns over Osimhen’s fitness after he was substituted in Galatasaray’s previous Turkish League game despite scoring a hattrick. However, the Napoli striker appears ready for action as he has joined his teammates in camp, giving the Super Eagles a significant boost ahead of the match.
On the other side, Rwanda’s coach, Adel Amrouche, initially called up a 28-man squad but trimmed it to 23 before the game. In addition, key players like Djabel Manishimwe, Jojea Kwizera, Hakim Sahabo, York Rafael, and Anicet Ishimwe made the final cut. Notably, Yves Habimana, who has been in fine form with eight goals and six assists in the Rwandan top-flight league, received his first national team call-up.
